If it has been temperamental then it could be a poor connection somewhere (the speedo is electronic, not mechanical).
I would check the connection on the trigger first as no dismantling is required. It's mounted on the diff cover - easy to get to if you clamber under the back of the car.

Pete.

batteries need replacing, common fault, do a search for it.

Got mine out of storage yesterday (two and a half years), and speedo wasn't working, after hooning it around the batteries started to recharge and it was bouncing all around the place, now it works fine, I was lucky!

Could be the fuse.

Have you isolated that as the souce of the problem? What tests have you done to confirm this?
If you're sure, then just replace like with like.

had this problem recently with a tourer the plug that goes to the diff fell to bits.. I took the wire and plug from a breaker so all was well but I reckon if its the plug you could get off with using female bullet connectors. as for the wire as suggested replace like for like.

Headlamp wire and plug from an E30 breaker, or the correct repair lead from BMW.
Don't attempt to repair the existing wire, or use the same wire and plug from a breaker, as the copper in the wire will have changed its physical characteristics as a result of vibrations from the diff, and will have become brittle.
