What's involved in cleaning the oil spray bar on my 318i m40 1989 engine and also what exact oil would best suit as it's a bit tappety? I keep getting chucked between 5w-40 and 10w-40.

Another quick question, is there any way of repairing split hoses?

Cheers

Cleaning the spray bar:

I soak mine for a few hours in white spirits/turps to release any gunk.

Split hose:

depends where the split is and how big the hose is.

Most people just change the spray bar as they arent that easy to clean.
Although i had a spare one and soaked it in petrol for a week and blew it out with an air line.
If your engine is abit tappety then drop some deisel oil in for a couple of thousand miles and it will help clean every thing and quieten it down a bit.

Hoses arent something that can realy be repaired.Youl just have to suck it up and get another one

Is the oil spray bar easy to see and remove once you take the cover off?

as for repairing a split hose if its a low pressure hose funds are that tight and you dont mind it looking a bit shit ... get some damp proof course instans gasket cable ties and duct tape ..

spred the ig over the dpc wrap it round cable tie in place then round and round with duct tape ...

tbh this is an emergency get you home repair with things you may have in an emergency toolbag (i do ) and itsnt going to be much cheaper then replacing the hose iespecially with good second hand

what hose is it ive probably got one

I am sure a spray bar was only a tenner or so when I lived in the Lakes (4ish years ago) but now seems to be £37 quoted in the genuine parts section?

People used to change them as easier than cleaning it but for that price get your rubber gloves and petrol/parrafin and clean it :-)
