flat spot

i have a flat spot when cold if i rev it from idle it splutters a bit but then revs fine.once the engine is warm it doesnt do it any ideas

The easiest and cheapest thing to check first is your Air Flow Meter, if its got oil in it, the flap could be sticking until it warms up, cleaned mine out with baby wipes and cotton buds lol, very technical you know...

Check that your plugs are clean, any visible air leaks (spray some WD40 around rubber intake boot and you will hear the engine note change if it sucks WD40 in through a split in the rubber)
Fuel mix maybe? The fuel mixture can only be checked with a machine.
Which engine do you have?
Sometimes a really good thrashing sorts these girls out.

An 'out of spec.' coolant temperature sensor for the ECU ('blue' temp. sensor) can cause exactly these symptoms.
