Soft Clutch Pedal

Hi I am new to the site. Just bought myself a really nice 318i. There are a couple of problems. The clutch is very soft and if you touch it very lightly the pedal goes all the way in with no resistance. If you press it firmly or pump it it's fine. There appears to be no fluid loss. Is there a problem with either the slave or master cylinder or is it something else entirely? Any help appreciated.

Hello!

It'll be the M/C leaking internally. It's a fiddly job to replace, but no special tools are needed. Get the slave cylinder changed at the same time, unless it's already been done.

Many thanks for the info. Are they readily available or do I have to go to a Specialist for the bits?

should be able to get them from most good components shops. It is good to do both at the same time.

Are you going to do it yourself? Sometimes the pipe can be a bit corroded and it can get damaged when you are taking the MC or SC off. Just be careful as once it is disconnected you aren't going to be able to drive anywhere.

PS Welcome to the zone.

Yes I was going to attempt it myself. One of the reason I bought the car was to be able to do some work myself although I am not an expert as you can tell. Once again thanks for the advice and of course the welcome.

You might want to look at this before you attempt anything.

If you know how to use a spanner and socket set, you'll do fine.

Brianmoooore once gave this piece of advice regarding this job....take the drivers seat out. Believe me, unless you like working whilst trying to stand on your head, do it! :D

Hi guys. Many thanks. Work is all completed. Master cylinder replaced and also replaced thermostat. Nice easy clutch and lots of heat now. Thermostat sitting exactly half way all the time.

Thanks again.
