I have a theory, based on experience, that a pump that is "well used" will fail if stored dry for any length of time.
There's nothing that can 'kill' a pump, unless your tank is full of grit, or you habitually run with the fuel light on.

No i rarely let the fuel level get too low as with old cars i never trust the reading on the guage fully. Maybe i'll just have to fork out for a new pump.

You've probably been unlucky with your second hand pumps!
Are you absolutely certain the pumps are at fault? Certain that electrical power is reaching them?

I have just removed a very good quiet pump from my 94k mile breaker should you require another.
