E30 Zone

Right, My M50 engine is finally ready to go in but i would still like to get rid of the oxidisation on the engine, does anyone know of a good product to bring it back to new?

I've tried petrol, gunk etc but it doesnÔš't really touch it.

Sand blasting the bare block is the only way to make a really good job if it.

Anything i can do at home tho? It doesnt have to be awesome but just look clean.

Well, I've used one of those wee round wire brush things that go into a drill to clean the major crap off the side of a Standard Vangard engine, and it worked OK. Again, not wonderful, but it did a reasonable job. I just sprayed the engine with red primer to keep the rust down a bit.

mix up 80%parafin with 20%washing up liquid and wire brush it on then wash off cleans very well
makes the same stuff you buy for degreasing etc in motor factors think they call it gunk but my method works really well hth Daz

B&Q do a black spray paint for wood stoves for about Ԛ£7 so it should handle the heat OK.
I bought some but haven't got around to using it yet, I think it's a matt finnish that can be applied to rust the same as hammerite.

Just out of interest does anyone know what hammerite is like with high temeratures?

I used some VHT black spray on my cam cover, not fitted it yet on account of being too lazy to go and buy a new cam cover gasket. It usually gives a matt finish but is designed to be applied to exhaust manifolds and stuff so being applied to the block shouldn't really challenge it much. You can get clear laquers for engines too.

This is on an M50 engine tho so i was after a cleaner rather than paint

wire brushes of various sizes and lots of elbow is the only way without blasting it.

Took me about 4 hours cleaning my M30 block.
