What should i be getting to the gallon with my 316i touring? And at motorway speeds do others feel the car revs quite high ?
Just curious to see what others get also with the 1.8 , 2.0 and 2.5

We ran a 316i touring for several years.
It's best tank to tank fiqure was 38mpg...worst was 18mpg...
In general use I reckoned on 31-33mpg.
I fitted a 4.1 diff to replace the 4.45,did bugger all for fuel economy but made it a whole lot quieter on the motorway!

The muscles in your right leg must be massive! You do realise that there's a 5th gear..?
I get 33mpg average in my 318i.

My 320i automatic get around 30-33 mpg. Would love to get above 38.
Think i can drive 45 on a full tank.
Not motorway driving, country roads up and down, turning left and right. 5-15 min drives.

so when i work out im getting 35 on a run its around about average. How hard is it to change the diff on these cars and will it go into the casing already there?

You swap the casing!
Support the car securely so that the wheels are free .
Unbolt the driveshafts at the diff output flanges.
Unbolt the propshaft from the font of the diff.
Support the diff with a jack.
Remove the speedo sensor plug.
Unbolt the diff rear mount.
Unbolt the diff(4 19mm bolts on the top)
Lower diff and remove.
As Mr Haynes says,re-fitting the replacement is the reverse of fitting...
Please note that even small case diffs are heavy and an arkward shape to lift whilst laid on your back under the car.
Two sizes of diffs are fitted to E30,we refer to them as 'small' and 'medium',identify by the number of bolts holding the rear cover plate on,small has 6,medium has 8.
Ratio is identified by a tag attached to the diff rear cover.

4.1 is stock on 320i.....this gives 65mph at 3000rpm.
No point in going any higher IMO.
Expect to pay around £25-50,and they are heavy to post,so look for a local one!

Well there's a thing!
I always thought that the tachometer measured engine speed in revolutions per minute....

I get approx 250-320 from a full tank in my 325i (Depends on how many times I need to visit my needy mother in Glasgow in a week). I know this to be true, because I always reset the counter - bit of a saddo, but I don't have a trip computer like my E46 and like to know these things.
From the above posts I'm very happy with this
My 330i gives me 29mpg combined, but then maybe I drive both like a girl!

My 325i convertible auto recently returned 33mpg on a round trip to Devon. This was a mixture of fast country roads, motorway and 'A' road driving. I thought this was pretty good for a 17 year old car. My daily drive a BMW 330d has averaged 45 mpg over 150,000 miles most of this at 85 mph on motorways ....just shows how things have changed.

I can get 440 miles from a 325 Manual Touring between fills if I drive slowly and stick to motorways; 250 if I enjoy the A roads; much-much less pottering around town.
Just loose the lead right foot.
Yes a modern Diesel will do more miles per gallon. But factor in depreciation, not to mention the fun and pride in driving a modern classic, and a cherished E30 will be a good investment.

440 miles on a tank??!

Is that a standard fuel tank? I once got 275 but normally 240 ish, though never a long run on the mway ... always take the derv for that

My 325 touring is running too rich, and I had no problem getting 325-350 miles from 46 litres.

I used to average about 330 to a tank on my 320, which I think is better than most of them manage! I had a long diff in it, new temp sensors, lots of servicing love etc. Setting the valves made a big difference too, like 40 miles per tank difference

My record is 310 miles on a full tank until the empty light comes on.
Filling from 'the light' to full is about 45 litres which given the mileage, equates to approx 30mpg.

I get 200 -250 miles to my 50 litre lpg tank, 18 mpg to 22mpg from my 325i. Which equates to 40.5 mpg to 49.5 mpg as per litre I only pay 0.47p!

I've averaged 240miles from my last 2 tanks. worked it out at about 26mpg, M42 engine. It's pretty poor I think

I'm getting about 24 - 26mpg average from the 2.8, it dosen't seem to matter how i drive it though, driving like it's icey all the time only gained me 20 miles over a full tank, so why not have some fun?
Just noticed it's the same as Jozi's M42

I should have gotten a M20 engined touring
I don't even drive it that hard, there's the odd bit of using all of 2/3 gear but generally not gunning it.
Trying to get to the bottom of it in another thread.

I average 28mpg in the 320i moredoor, best 38, worst 21 iirc. Town driving is the killer, and to get over 30 it has to be the m/way or dually and not too quick, anything over 80 and I might as well have left more time and taken the scenic/twisty/fun route.
