Help With Megatune, Pleeease!

Hi.
I'm really hoping someone could advise me on what I might be doing wrong with my laptop and Megatune.
I have MS v3.0, a crappy old Dell laptop running Windows '98 and Megatune2.25.
The car has been mapped but now the weather has got cold, it won't start (it was a struggle when it was the middle of summer!), so I need to adjust some settings.
I've loaded Megatune onto said laptop and I have a data cable which was working when I borrowed someone elses laptop a little while ago.
As my laptop wasn't the one with which the car was mapped I wish to save my map onto my laptop, so if I mess up the settings I can put it back to how it was.
However, I can't seem to get the laptop and ecu communicating, when I use the 'Communication - Setting' dropdown I get this message;
It tells me verify the ecu communication, but I've tried setting it to ports 1-10 but it always says 'No response'.
Should I really try ports 11-99..?
'Tis driving me mad because it took me ages to get this far!
And I'm fed up with telling everyone that my only car won't work because it's a bit chilly!
I'm a complete numpty with anything computery and I don't understand most of the Megamanual!
Any advice much appreciated, thanks!
Martin.

Usually Com1 or 2 for serial.
Are there settings for Parity, Stop bits and Flow control?

Errrr......
This is what I mean, I'm sorry, I have no idea what you're talking about (apart from the serial bit)!
Thanks anyway!
Trying to get my head around MS has made me feel like a complete simpleton!
Blingsta, I'd love to take it to Ant, but it won't start!

stop pissing about with mega tune as you will really fuck it up best thing to do is call me tomorrow afternoon when i am out of bed as i am nights and i will tell you the best way to get your car started as MS requires a minimum cranking RPM and if you are not reaching this it WILL NOT START. IF said battery is low and it cannot produce enough CRANKING RPM.
DO NOT PUMP THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AS YOU WILL TRIGGER FLOOD CLEAR AND GUESS WHAT THE CAR WILL NOT START. there is not a problem with MS in the cold as i have used it for over 2 years without any problems. I am on another Standalone ECU now and i never have any problems with this one either.
ther is a method to starting a car on a stand alone ecu. as far as i know martin is your car still requires mapping of some sort but as you well know this costs money and time. my number is in my sig.
Regards
Ben

Hi Ben.
If I stop messing about with Megatune it won't run again until spring time!
Seriously, I have a BIG battery on it which is well charged, so it's cranking like a good'un!
It still won't fire even leaving the throttle pedal well alone.
It does need some settings changed, and I know how to do that once the laptop and ecu are communicating as I have used Ant's laptop before.
Thanks for the offer, I'll try and call you tomorrow if I get time!

If you r using MS1, then try com1 and 9600bit/s, if MS2 try com1 and 115200bit/s.
also try looking at "in windows" control panel, system, device manager and check com ports are not showing ! or disabled.
hope this helps

well you cold start enrichment is wrong then but i assume settings have changed since all the Crank sensor had been changed etc but i am sure it sould start if you use my method.
sorry about the rant but i have to numerous people who use squirt to leave the car alone when starting as they all complain but you have tha car in the workshop and it starts first time which is highly annoying, then car goes back to customer and it wont start, then the saga continues
regards
Ben

martin from your picture your com ports are allocated to something elese and it will not let Mega tune access them i will give ant a tinkle and see if i can pop down on wed with his laptop as my mega tune is designed to run with Vems now i have another laptop i can use so we should be able to get it started and then up to Ant to sort the rest out an you can have a drivable car but you need to get some pennies out of your pocket my friend

Martin
its COM1 for defo
open device manager and disable the laptops on board modem as that often causes this issue.
9600 is the correct rate, parity and stop bits as MT defaults
Cold starting can be a PITA with large injectors, I'd try a tiny increase in cranking enrichment 1st before messing with the warmup bins and afterstart enrichment cycles.
Change ONE thing at a time , be prepared though as this is a very time consuming affair indeed and the engine is only cold once a day remember ( or 6 hours from last run minimum ! )

Great info, thanks guys!
And thanks again Ben for taking time to chat this afternoon.
I've got a few things to try now, and I do realise I will probably spen a long time doing it!
All I wanted from this thread is to get my laptop in a state where I can adjust things / put it back to how it was if I mess it up!
Cheers,
Martin.

Yeah.
I've been a wally and left an interior light on last night and all day so battery on charge and I'll try tomorrow after work.
I think I've disabled my laptop modem though, so fingers crossed.
I don't expect to have it running instantly, I know it will probably take some trial and error, but I need to learn to do this stuff myself!
