New motor parts..

Going to do a engine rebuild sometime soonish and was thinking what parts need replacing. So what I thought would be a good idea is a list of parts that need replacing. The parts could be catergorised into 2 parts HEAD and BLOCK... or TOP and BOTTOM

I also think it would be a good idea to have two sections to each consisting of parts that are recommended changing and parts that are highly recommended {your a idiot if you dont change them}.

For example

HEAD/TOP..

Recommended parts..
regrind cam

Parts that must be replaced..
head bolts
valve guides
cam seal
head gasket
rocker cover gasket

ect ect

I think this might be a very valuable tool to those of us who are thinking about doing a engine build.. We could easily look up the wiki and see what parts we are absolutely going to have to buy and also see what other parts that are advisory but not critical. If budget permits buy them.

Could people WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT post some parts so we can get a list going.

When you buy a "headgasket set" you get all seals & gaskets associated with the head so no need to buy a rocker gasket as far as I know.

Rockers, I had one snap the other day and noticed that the snapped one had worn down, I'd replace them all, 10.50 each from GSF, I'd assume that OE would be double that but the non OE look to be better cast than the OE ones

Cam seals should come with head set, there are often valve seals in there too

Was talking to andyboy on Sunday,he says there is normaly no need to replace valve guides unless the wear is obvious...just fit new seals, part of the head gasket set.
Exhaust valves wear/burn far more than inlets...
Cam/rocker shafts, cam wear is obvious when you examine the tips of the lobes, but also look at the bearing surfaces,in the head the cam bearings are not replacable...
ALL other seals/gaskets should be changed.
Bottom?
(oh yes please, the actress said to the bishop)
bearing shells, both big end and main, all seals, check the oil pump for wear,if the gears slop about it's had it!
There's a mesh strainer,check for holes...
Waterpump,if it spins freely and has no slop in the shaft, why replace?
Cam belt is a must,less than £10 so it's daft to re-use.
