E30 Zone

I'd like to rustproof my E30 325i properly before winter properly sets in (although today and yesterday have been solid rain!) and wondered what sort of things are worth doing or if anyone's written a good guide to it.

The first thing I thought of is taking those plastic panels out from the front inner arches, cleaning it all up and then coating the whole inner arch in either waxoil or old engine oil.

Aside from that, I'm not really sure on how to go about the rest of the car. I spose doig the same on the whole underside would be a good idea, but what about areas on the rest of the body, like the scuttle? Mines got immaculate scuttles at the moment and I'd like to keep it that way.

Also, I thought I read somewhere that BMW sell their own brand of waxoil - did I misread that or is is true? I always thought there was only one waxoil - the Finnegans stuff (spelt Waxoyl).

Old engine oil sounds an attractive idea,but how would you apply it?
Be very messy,and bits that drop off may form a hazard for other road users as well.
Waxoyl is messy to apply,place something under the car to catch the residue and be prepared to scrub the bath out after you have washed the filthy stuff out of your hair!
Waxoyl also does not dry out completely,so the next time you stick your mitt under the car it comes out black....against all that,it is readily available at a sensible price and is easy to apply with the kit sold with it,it also 'creeps' into areas you cannot reach by any other means.
Other products are available,but most require at least an air compresser to apply,just brushing underseal over much more than a wheel housing does not appeal at all to me.

The idea with engine oil would be to apply a thin layer (not a huge amount - not enough to drip anyway) with a paint brush to areas like the inner arches - at least that's how I imagine it. Wouldn't be able to get it into box sections that way, though. I did have some old used engine oil but finally decided yesterday to take it down the tip along with six bin-bags full of other shite.

Waxoyl/waxoil does seem to be one of the best things. I've just been outside and taken one of the front wheels off, followed by the arch liner and it's so clean in there it's unbelievable. Even more reason to scrub any dirt off and rust-proof it good and proper.

I have no idea if the waxoil that I see people talking about is all referring to the same (Finnegans) brand or not. I assume they are, in which case a trip to Halfords would seem in order.

I'm also still looking for a guide as to which areas I should be thinking about pumping the stuff into.
