Ok, what was thought to be a knackered torque converter on my 318i '89'Auto turned out not to be,with thanks to spadge who sold me another icv.Gave it a clean and stuck it on and it solved all my grumbles, but now the car revs upto 2000rpm when starting from cold.Once upto temp the revs are good.Could this be that everything is out of tune now that the icv is working correctly??

isnt it just the choke doing what it should?

Thanks willinz,i did have a little play with the throttle stop when i was trying to solve the bad idle issues i had,so i will try what you've explained and see if that's it.
I did think about the choke bobbin, but should it rev 1000rpm higher??

What willnz said, try the butterfly first. If that doesn't help you might want to have a look at the blue temp sensor

My daughter use to live at Denton close in botley and now lives in cumnor so i'm out your way every other week. As for the start this morning, the car starts fine, just revs at 2000rpm even though i adjusted the butterfly. When it's warm it ticks over at 900rpm.Are you very mechanicaly minded? maybe i can pop over to you for some advice? When are you doing your roofs?

I wouldn't say i was very mechanically minded i'm afraid i just had similar fast idle problems that i tried to solve for the last year! I tried everything, checked all hoses for air leaks, replaced the throttle body, cleaned the ICV, checked the resistance of the blue temp sensor at the sensor and at the ECU which seemed fine and still had really fast idle at cold start along with it running very rich until it warmed up.
I then replaced the blue temp sensor as a final resort, cost £20 from cotwold BMW and it sorted it instantly! The car runs really sweet now and uses loads less fuel too! If you're stumped how to do it i dont mind showing you, litteraly takes 5 mins after you've figured out how to undo it. Only trouble is car has to be cold to work on.
EDIT: Denton close is about 2 minute walk from my house. i live on fogwell over the road
