What the hell is this? Should there be a hole here?!

See picture..

One end of the pipe goes to the inlet manifold and the other end goes into I dont know.. and there is a big hole in the pipe..

Could this answer any of my running problems?

new pipe needed will cost very little to replace and will help with running issues !!

I don't really know m20s but is it the vacuum advance? in which case yes is the answer, I'm sure someone who knows more will be along soon.

any vacuum leak will cause running issues so get it sorted before looking into anything else

E30's are a little more advanced technically than vacuum advance/retard!
All done electronically.
This pipe connects to the fuel pressure regulator, and maintains a constant fuel pressure across the injectors with varying inlet manifold pressure.
The hole in this pipe will be a) letting air into the engine, which is not being metered by the air meter, therefore weakening the mixture, and b) giving excessive fuel pressure at idle and over run, giving a richer mixture under these conditions.

Would it contribute to it smelling very rich on start up and tickover?

I think the simple answer is there clearly shouldn't be a hole there lol

haha.. thanks!!

trying to figure out why my car is overfuelling and running a little rough.. has now done 199961 miles, and I expect that all of these parts are 20 years old, never been changed.. so when browsing I wanted to know what would actually happen if there is a hole in this pipe.. 8)

Like the others said, get that hose sorted and see how you get on, ask Cotswolds BMW for a quote, will be dirt cheap and best to get bmw parts for stuff like that.


It might be worth getting your injectors cleaned if its close to 200,000 miles as over that time they will have got a little clogged up, if you'd like to do so then drop me a PM.

doesn't the FPR increase the fuel pressure along with engine load?
surely if it only needed to maintain a constant pressure, it wouldn't need to reference from the inlet manifold pressure (vacuum)?

One end of a injector is in the inlet manifold, and the other is connected to the fuel rail. The FPR maintains a constant pressure between these two points.
The FPR increase fuel pressure with reference to external atmospheric pressure, but not across the injector.

Thats what I did after taking the photograph..

It works but its very tight.. so I'll just get some pipe weekend. Then check all of the other pipes in the engine bay.

Was thinking that if holes are starting to develop prob best to change the whole thing for the sake of a couple of £ :)

'Course it is, but the "temporary" similar fix I did on the red one in my sig about five years ago is still holding fine!
