Whats the best way to crimp/sercure these:



My soldering iron just warms up the cable and the iron then gets cold as its heating the entire loom up lol!

Any ideas want to get it sortet tomorrow.

we use these at work we have proper lug crimpers to crimp them. I'll see if i can find a picture.

Slide some heatshrink down the cable, strip back the wire, crimp the crimp on using the crimper, slide the heatshrink over the join and then heatgun it! Not sure if there are cheaper or other types that you can use but thats the type of crimper that we use at work.

Stick it in your motor, drive to the nearest building site, get the plumber to solder it for you. (needs blowtorch/solder/flux)

The crimper is the right way to treminate these cable connectors
Make sure the cable is the correct size and automotive quality

If the soldering is done incorrectly:
1. The solder will wick its way up the cable - making the cable quite stiff
2. If the lug moves on the cable before the solder cools, you will wnd up with a dry joint (excessive voltage drop across same)

Better to crimp the lug. Go to your local electrical wholesaler with lug and cable already prepared and ask them to crimp the lug. They usually hire a crimping tool for £7-10 per day, so slip him a few ££.

that is a crimp and not designed to be soldered. A special crimping tool is needed from the look of it , it looks like maybe a six or ten mm crimp. Go to an electrical wholesaler or if you know a sparky get him to lend you his tool. It won't solder and shouldn,t be. Where are you in the world.

I just had a look at my local motorsport shop and they said they can crimp them I'm over there tomorrow so will get them to do the main cable but the car isn't mobile so will have to rent some from some where for the loom connectors.

I like to crimp them first, then run solder down into the joint.

When you crimp them, do it twice once at half the compression and once at the full compression. We use them in a solar powered racing boat and we've found that they can prematurely fail if not done carefully. We've never used any solder.

Hmm the tool is £70 odd and I doubt I'll use it much.

Odd question does any one have a pair I could rent ?

Right on the first part, wrong on the second.
Electrical wholesalers usually hire the tool out, and the terminals will accept solder - they are 'tinned', which means covered in a film of solder.

If you still need the lug crimped, send lug and cable c/w return envelope postage paid to myself. Will do FOC. PM me if req'd.

What size crimp is it?

You need an 'uninsulated' crimper, as others have said most sparks will have them.

Screwfix sell them going up to 16mm2 for about £25
