Cruise Control Connectors & Switches

I've been going mad trying to figure out what the connectors are for on my cruise control, as it doesn't seem to match up exactly with what's written in this forum and on another site where I found a guide with photos. Could someone please help me out?

Image

On the above image, as far as I can tell, the plug circled in red goes into the special equipment connector behind the glovebox - is this the feed from the brake lights? The Green circled one is an earth (is there somwhere to connect this to or do I have to remove the connector and earth it manually?). The blue one, I'd guess, is for the clutch switch? But I can't figure out what this plugs into?

To add to my confusion, my kit came with two switches, pictured below.

Should I be using both of these - one on the brake and one on the clutch? I would've thought I'd just need one of them on the clutch, and the existing brake light would be fed through to the control unit somehow. Which one is the clutch switch? As well as being different connectors/colours, the red button one is a push-to-make and the black is a push-to-break switch.

Can someone please put me out of my confused state? :?

Hi mate, only just spotted this thread.

You're correct about all the connectors, red to the junction box above glove box, blue is the clutch switch, green is earth lead, I just cut the connector off, and earthed it above the glovebox with the others.

When I bought a cruise system from the states, it came with the same switch as the red on pictured, but I went to the dealers and bought a new UK spec one with bracket.

The cruise system picks up the signal for when the brakes are applied through the system elsewhere, no need to wire anything into the system.

Hope that helps.

Cheers - when you bought the UK switch, did it come with a plug that went to the lead in the picture? Or is there something intermediate that's still missing?

Looking at your pictures, I would say you have a late loom, and early switches. You need to order switch 61 31 8 360 421 and bracket 65 71 1 385 084 (assuming you have a late model E30). The above switch will plug directly into the connector you circled in Blue.

If you have an early (pre facelift) E30, then you will need to use the switch you already have, and modify the wiring to suit. I'm not sure if it's possible to fit the late switch to an early car though.

Cheers,

Ian.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know, and it explains why I was a bit confused. I do indeed have a post-facelift car, so will be ordering the switch later. Maybe at last I can get this fitted now! :)

Just to be really thorough, you will also need a screw to secure the bracket to the pedal assy - BMW part 07 11 9 915 033. Alternatively, any old M6 screw (approx 12mm long) will do
