Tank pretty much full?
1-filler pipe is rusty
2-rubber joining pipe from 1 to tank neck is perished
3-tank neck is rusty where it enters tank
1 and 3 are involved and potentialy expensive,2 could just be a loose clip....

most likely the metal pipe attached to the tank or the filler pipe itself. new tanks are about £100ish from ecp and new filler necks are about £150 iirc.

Had this problem on my e30, turned out to be the rubber ring seal that sits between the fuel pump and the surface of the fuel tank where the pump clips down, under the rear seat bench.
