Intermittant stuttering on M40

1990 318i, been running fine most of the time (touch wood)
Occasionally, as happened today, it'll stutter at low engine speeds. The engine looses power, stutters, sometimes get a few pops from the exhaust. Throttle position doesn't seem to make any difference. Once engine speed gets above about 1500rpm it clears and drives normally.
Makes pulling away from junctions interesting
It doesn't always do it and seems to improve as the journey progresses.
I have a vague recollection of the ECU switching between using TPS and AFM at 1500rpm but can't find the thread.
So should I be looking at AFM or TPS? Maybe something else? Could the blue temp sensor cause this maybe?
