one of the senders are faulty pop up the back seat, remove the inspection plate n unplug one at a time see when it stops being erratic. then you'll figure which ones buggered

also worth removing the cluster and checking the small 8mm nut behind the fuel guage. to remove guage click links, technical then find the dash swap site it explains how to remove cluster.
easy way to see if it is this part is to whack the top of the dash when it goes funny, if it returns to normal try my tip, if not try the above

i had the same problem and went for the "nut on the back" attack which worked, mind you the nut was missing so i nicked the one from the temp gauge

, all is fine and dandy now

Did you try to nip it up a bit more anyway? Mine didn't appear to be loose, but was flickering about. I nipped it up a tiny bit (didn't even really seem to tighten it was that little amount) and touch wood, it hasn't given me any more problems. That was 4 or so months ago now.

Ian

Yeah, I have had this problem in the past. It was my fuel sender sensor under the rear seats. So take the old one out and clean it, it may work or just replace it, its a small cheap fix. Do that and it should be fine.

update is i got it fixed finally this eve. i took out the sender under the back seat opened it up to see the floataion wire was broke. we went to the spare parts department(scrap e30s) and got one out of a 316 touring. interestingly was that a 325 sport dont have the second sender or a 316 saloon but the touring does. any way fixed now and rocking around!!
