Has anyone else tried to fix this problem?

im seriously considering stitching on a bit of elastic onto the old webbing in the hope that it will pull the bar back and keep the fabric tucked in !!!

What do you guys think?

I'd also like to know (hope you don't mind) :)

My straps are hanging loose when the roof closes. I did read a while back about a product the yanks used to solve this problem, but can't find the thread :(

i had this problem and was told to get a pair of pliers and crimp them and this has helped..(the cause on mine was getting them caught in the horseshoe and crimping them the other way)

some owners in the states have used these as an aid

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=p ... -388-90441

with satisfactory results.....but i have never tried them

as I understand it you cannot put new tensioners on without taking the roof off :x

i was browsing thru the bay and came across these-
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MGF-TF-hood-frame ... 240%3A1318

i e-mailed the chap who asked for pictures of my roof, i sent him one, but he said that the webbing on the bm's are closer to the o/s edge and there was no space to fit these on... he did say that i should try to maybe stitch a new elastic onto the old webbing ..

i think i will give it a go !.. only thing is, i'll have to hand stitch it.. need to find some thin but strong thread !... :D

Dave.. i cant remember but im pretty sure my one stick out like what you explained, but theres no point in crimping them as the fabric itself isnt tucking back under the bar.. (does that make sense) ? no tension to pull the bar back !

im pretty sure you can get to the straps when the roof is half 3/4 of the way down.. then i'll just try to stitch the new elastic straps ontop of the original ones...

if you crimp it the other way it helps the fabric fall right..also have you got the wire that goes through the roof
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=54&fg=10
part no 33..this helps the fabric fold properly

Hmmm !! the wire that goes thru the roof? thats not visible is it Dave ? how do i know if its there or not? looks like its right at the front..

i'll try the crimping idea first, but im not too sure if crimping them so they fold the right way will provide enough tension to pull the bar back ?

yes it is visible ..it goes through a tube in the fabric horizontally above the drivers head and hooks onto the tensioner

the tensioners have a spring metal going through them and it helped mine..

by crimping I mean finding where the fault is where they have been caught in the horseshoe ..bending them the other way and then pinching them with pliers...if that makes sense

Imy, do you have to pull the bar back and tuck the fabric in so the roof sits in the compartment and lid closes properly mate?

will def try this on a nice day... just one question.. it says to undo screw (16) and remove bars 2+3 ... does this mean to remove the bars completely or only remove the end where screws 16 are ????

looking at the pictures, he is using velcro stretch which i have also found on ebay, the length shown on the box (in the link) is 68cm... is that long enough to reach from 1st to 2nd bar ???
