does anyone know if it is possible to replace the air flow meter (a 318is) with a mass air flow meter and get the car to work. Reason for asking is i am trying to improve to air into the engine and know the the air flow meter is very restrictive. Already have big throttle body, mapped ecu etc

Seem to recall someone saying it costs somewhere in the region of Ԛ£700 as you need a piggyback ECU to go with the MAF.
For about the same money, you could have a programmable ECU and lose all restrictions from the inlet altogether, plus having control over all settings for fuel and ignition

Pretty sure you need a piggy back ECU for the MAF conversion.
Think the signals coming out of the MAF are quite different to the AFM. Also, the MAF needs enough juice to heat it's element which I'm not sure the std ECU will know to supply.

Yoe deffo need the piggyback chip arrangement. They are completely different how they work so the electronic signal needs to be converted.

Yea you'd need parts from an E36 323i
Along with Piggyback ECU etc
