Noise when i depress the clutch.

Ok this started a couple of days ago and scares me slightly

When i depress the clutch pedal i get noise, not grinding or chattering more an engagement whir, almost a rattle but not quite, sort of louder engine soundish (sorry if my description doesnt help). It goes when you release the clutch pedal and are in gear. Also when you depress the pedal it feels lumpy? The pedal is also quite heavy.

Im thinking the slave cylinder thingy but not sure. Car is a 1990 325i m20 engine.

Please let it be something simple

I may be completely wrong, but I've heard of something similar before - it could be your clutch on the way out, or, on one car I used to own - mine did this sort of thing after a clutch change - and I was told that this was because the flywheel was slightly warped.

when you press the clutch pedal it presses a bearing against the clutch to disengage it,
when this bearing wears it makes the noise you have described
im afraid its gearbox off to replace the bearing,and while your there you may aswell change the clutch.
clutch kits come with the bearing in question!

New clutch it is - while it's being fitted, give the flywheel the once over.

id go for the clutch kit,
i recently brought a sachs clutch kit for £100 from europarts (the same one bmw would charge you a lot more for)
avoid cheap ones if you want it to last.

Thanks guys. Got a new clutch kit, and the gents at Bartly BMW fitted it for me. Good job to, it was a mess in there Discovered the car had been running noisy without the clutch depressed lol, now runs lot quieter and clutch is as light a a feather in camparison to what it was.

Yes, they are noisey when the clutch pedal is up. When you press the pedal it takes up the slack in the bearing and mutes the noise.

Thank fcuk for that when I just read it and lee mentioned the layshaft I nearly cried.. release bearings I can cope with.
