Happy New Year first of all.

Right I have looked up on previous posts and have found a few snippits that help me.
I was rushing out on NYE to a party and I had a smell and some very light steam in the car and instantly recognised it, as I had the same smell and very hot foot last year in my M3 but when it happened in the M3 the whole car steamed up and I couldn't even see out of the windows.
I checked out on the zone when that happened and sussed it as the matrix dropped it off at the garage. £545 later all was well but I was
a little shocked at the 9 hrs labour but I do understand I just dont want to fork out the same again so I'm asking how far do I need to strip down so it can be worked on without to much hassle for the mechanic or should I be capable of doing it myself.? I'm a spark by trade so I'm not completely dim and have a good tool selection.

I have ordered up two new spec cooliant cap covers as mentioned by BrianMoore, but I'm suspecting that the sensible preventative measure may be slightly late...is there a way of knowing for sure before the car becomes worked on..?

I thank you all now for any help given

Lui

Most likely thing to have failed is the electric heater valve. You can change that (just about) by removing the inspection panels above and to the right of the glovebox. Matrix can be changed by removing the two centre consoles, and usually by dismantling a little of the brake linkage as well. Not difficult jobs at all.
