If you get a lot of vibration which you can feel through the steering wheel whilst braking from reasonably high speed, it's a good sign that the discs could be wharped. I would also check your tyres. Old tyres can give a similar effect if there is a bobble in one of them. If the latter was the case you would also feel vibration esp at higher speeds even when the car is not braking. :D

I'm not sure how or why they wharp but I have had a few cars suffering from this. Easy to replace and not massively expensive. I think somewhere like Quikfit would be able to confirm whether or not they are wharped, but be careful as they might tell you they are just to sell u some new ones. Or am I being over-cynical?? 8O

Were you really hard on the brakes, doing some spirited driving? You could have cooked the brakes, which would leave very little braking force and a really hard pedal.

yeah it was kinda heavy braking maybe from 50 to a stand still... but midway thru braking the pedal went hard and it took aaaages to stop! i almost pooood my pants!
but i took it steady for the next mile and then tried the pedal again and it did the same :(

If the brakes are warped.. I've got a set of nearly new (GSF) ones here off my old 325i touring. Think they did about 500 miles before I broke the car. Drop me a PM if you want them anytime.

Ian

Ahh Sheffield.. didn't see that  Quite possibly then :P

The reason I replaced the ones I did on my previous touring was that the previous discs became warped (lots of 3-figure speeds to / from work over 65 miles each day). IIRC, it kinda happened "all of a sudden" too.. ie: I didn't notice anything and then there was plenty to notice. New discs and pads sorted it sweet.. cost me ~£60 from GSF I think.

Ian

GSF Sheffield are one of the better branches in the area and carry quality E30 brake discs and pads in stock, I’ve got Brembo disc's and Textar(factory fit) pad's and would recommend them to anyone.

BEWARE cheapo brake parts, I fitted some trupart pads out of desperation on a VW Scirocco, I heard the metal/metal scrape and that’s all I could get hold of instantly... The old Rocco’s didn't have good brakes at the best of times but with those pads it was dangerous and when I tested them (a mild test really) with a emergency stop from 60 they poured smoke out of both front wheels and sent the pedal into the carpet, another set of EBC greens were ordered that evening.

il be going euro parts for my trade discount :)

cheers for the advice!

iv got a water leak too and my mate said its from the water pump?
is it a matter of taking the pump off sealing it and sticking it back on?

Not quite that simple, to get the pump off you need the cambelt and tensioner off so they might aswell be changed too.

The pump should also be changed every 2nd cambelt change so if you don't know if it was done last time then it's better to replace it, get one with a metal impellor, should be under £30 and ask for a GK if they can get one (factory fitted brand).
