E30 Zone

After many months scouring all the places I know, I finally obtained a *full* 12 button OBC kit (& paid over the odds for it) ready for retro fitting onto my 325 Touring - yay!!!

Having read through the guide on the E30Wiki I'm now very dubious of being able to fit this myself without braking something or c0cking it up in a spectacular fasion (having the mechanical & electrical know-how of a urban emu).

For starters I don't have the stereo removal kit for the original blaupunkt unit or have the foggiest how to pass the loom through the firewall or attach the loom to any part of the car. Let alone have any confidence in removing the heater matrix/panel (if I knew what one was).

I think what Im trying to say is; anyone fancy lending a lowley neebie a helping hand?

I can offer, well........what's in your imagination? (although that's out of the question........and that)

BTW: (I've tried Clayton cars & Wheelbase BMW who said they didn't want the job).

its a pretty straightforward job in fairness, the guide on the zone is acurate enough

you shouldnt need to remove heater matrix, just the panel with the heater nobs and radio in

the part of the obc loom that goes through the bulkhead, behind the glove box (for the horn and temperature sensor) goes through the existing big rubber grommet for the fuse box,etc. and as alex says, you don't need to touch the heater matrix but you definitely need the radio and speedo pod removed.

I've finaly plucked up the courage to takle this job myself (after two auto-electrical stores said no to taking on the job).

Unfortunaly I hit a several snags:

1) Where to mount the relay unit (guide says above the ECU). I have the factory Blaupuhkt pre-amp unit there
2) Where to fit the internal gong (eventualy squeezed it behind the heater controlls)
3) Brake ducting missing so can't find suitable placement for external sensor
4) No idea at all where to put the exteral horn nor the protective casing for it
5) Keeps blowing severeal fuses inc the radio (now doesn't work)
6) No idea how to keep the external loom into the car - can't find the rubber gromit thinging through the firewall)


Any ideas or again happy to suggest this - can offer beer tokens &/or Zone contributions for some help please

2. underdash panel is the factory fit place.(ill show you in a pic)
3. I have brake duct if you need one.
4. ?
5. short circuit somewhere, is the wiring good(not split showing bear metal.)
6. big rubber gromet behind the carpet behind the glovebox.

in the pic below there is a small rectanglar black plastic grill. The gong sits behind this grill.

Also - couldn't find a way to fit the indicator stalk - well TBH I couldn't even removed the trim from under the sterring column (could only find two screws - but feels like its held in by more)

remove the steering wheel to find the other 2 !

Thanks for that tip, however on a tech 1 wheel can't find obvious mean to do so

clip the plastic around the BMW badge of and it will revile a nut.

When steering wheel of you will also see the screw to undo the stalks.

steering wheel, remove bmw badge, big nut underneath, undo, pull, dont hit yourself in the face with it if its a bit stiff to pull off

I did it without removing the heater panel!! Just the glove box and radio..............

Did mine at the weekend, using the zone guide plus another I found on google. It took me about 4 hours, but I was tidying wires etc etc as I went.

I managed to do it without breaking anything. Just be methodical and remember what screws go where. The fiddly bit is removing the clock without losing the screws. You can just loosen them and take the clock out.
