I'm trying to replace my water pump on my '88 325 touring and have got one from GSF which looks like the one in the parts diagram below:

Image

Trouble is my old pump only has one 'exit', and the new one has two. The GSF description for the one i have is 'E30 325i 88>91 M20'. Is the correct one 'E30 325i 85>88 M20 BQ??

Any help much appreciated!

The twin exit pump is the early one and the single is the later type, which you need.

Maby it's been boxed wrong but it needs exchanging for a single exit pump with a metal impeller if possible...

Thanks for the advice. I'll have to swop it!

they have just made an assumption on the wrong part, 1988 being a changeover year, I had exactly the same issue when I bought a pump from my local motorfactors. Only realised the difference when I went to fit the new pump, it was late, i was fed up, so the old one went back on :D :P :P

Unfortunately I didn't look closely at the two and had fitted the new one before I realised they were different! Never mind - i'll swop them tomorrow!

On a slightly different note the additional pipe for the earlier car, where does this go to, I have this type pump on a 2.7 eta with a later e30 type rad, the smaller hose is blanked off, would this cause problems.?
Any advice appreciated..

IIRC on the pre-facelift cars it goes to the coolant bottle, the smaller outlet being blanked off shouldnt cause any issues if the rest of the system is facelift with the coolant bottle on the N/S wing.

Saying that it's not ideal either.

Thanks for the info, ..
Does any body know if the later pump will replace the earlier type pump without problems..?
Thanks for your help.

The later pump is a direct replacement for the early one, assuming the rest of the cooling system is the later type as well.
GSF is at fault (there's something novel!), since no touring of any age had the early pump
