strange noise from drivetrain, 1990 iS

I have a noise coming from the back end of my car that i just can't figure out. when the car is driven there is no noise but when i let off the throttle a whining clattering sound emanates. this quietens down if i dip the clutch and will go away if i brake with reasonable force. it started making the noise one evening when i was driving the car fairly hard. the diff gave up shortly after and i assumed the replacement would cure the problem but it hasnt. ive also changed the prop centre bearing to no avail. a mechanic friend at work had a ride in it at the weekend and diagnosed it to be coming from the nearside of the car. and that it could be a problem with the half shaft bearing in mind it only does the noise when not under load or braking. im sure its not the wheel bearing as the usual checks dont turn up anything to indicate this. any ideas?

Dose it make the niose when the car is not moving?? sounds like your clutch relise bearing...... when you depress the clutch (when the car is not moving) dose the sound go away? if it dose its a ((% chance its the clutch relise bearing) hope this helps
