Shaking Steering Wheel over 100mph

Hi,

Can anyone enlighten me to why my steering wheel is now shaking when I go over 100mph?

I thought it was my wheels...and that they may need balancing/tracking or something but it seems fine around 60-70 mph so I kinda ruled that out...

Can anyone help...please?

Thanks.

Mines was the same up until I got 4 new tyres.

It didnt help in the first place that there were 4 different tyres on it (from when I bought it :o: ) but with the new ones all 4 matched and all 4 were balanced before being put on and now there is no more shaking.

If your tracking is ok then getting them balanced should fix it.

Are all 4 the same brand/make tyre? Same tread left etc?

Wheel balance or tracking most likely.

Could be ballencing or the track control arm bushes worm

tracking won't give you wheel shake or vibration , it will wear out your tyres and could affect handling if its a long way off . i would think wheel ballance , tyre out of shape or wheel damage as murran said

This is NOTHING to do with balancing, if your wheels aren't balanced right the shaking is at 60mph, anything over 70 and its a different story.

There are 3 things it could be

1 - bent wheels or flat spots on the rim
2 - the wheel is not centred on the hub (you need spigot rings)
3 - the tyres are out of shape, uneven wear, flat spots from locking the brakes up, standing for a very long period of time, or they are that old they are degrading/de-laminating

Not just fronts either, the rears can make the steering wheel shake just as much!

Badly ballanced wheels can shake at any speed

Id like to see shaking at 10mph due to imbalanced wheels winkeye its not the wheels you have to counter balance, its the tyres, proper tyres dont need balancing

No matter how straight (round) your wheels are, if you fit a poor quality tyre that is out of shape the wheel is going to wobble at high speed

Hi guys thanks so much for the info and help!

Right the story is that I have 3 out of 4 buckled wheels...just my luck!

I saw this when I had all four wheels balanced yesterday afternoon.

And I'm getting the tracking done later on today.

All tyres are the same and with loads of good tread!

All in all I need some new alloys with tyres...and most of all look out for these F ing pot holes!

Ive never seen a tyre that hasnt had to be ballanced

but anything over 50 can be down to balancing

But im sorry ive never fitted a fking tyre in my life or worked on a car

Mind you they do look half decent but why has this happened? Because they have been cheaply made by BK? Never again for me!

If you set it up right it might be OK with 4 buckled wheels
