Are you saying it goes when you push the clutch down ?
Btw a recording is no good fella, it can't relay where the noise is comming from.

sounded just like my step dads b25 when we snapped a rocker going 130mph up a steep hill

Im going to jump on the rocker bandwagon too, it sounds too 'mechanical' for a blowing manifold + they tend to get quieter when the manifold warms up and expands.

Crikey....that sounds 'orrible......certainly, my first move would be to spend 5 mins removing the rocker cover.....the cause SHOULD be obvious judging by that noise...........

I'd say the camshaft is utterly shagged in that.
Don't think you need feeler gauges, I suspect you could walk through some of the gaps.
My guess would be a blocked spray bar has killed the cam.

if you had a snapped rocker you'd know about it, they run like a pig on 5 and theres no power
edit: just listened

sounds like a machine gun. Who ever "rebuilt" it might not have! Sounds top end and something very wrong!

whip the rocker cover off, if you cant see anythin wrong, run it with the rocker cover off. and listen, get a bit of suitable wood and try to hold each tappet in turn down on to the valve side. the noise will change like it did for me when i did that on mine.
no need to take the head off you can slide the rocker shaft out the front using a mid sized pry bar and a couple of different length 3/8ths sockets to progessivly shuv it out.
