m40 timing

sorry if its a stupid question but, having trouble timing my m40. does anyone have any pointers? i.e number one piston? flywheel side or radiator?

Cylinder 1 is closest to the radiator, but for belt timing it makes no difference, as 1 and 4 are at TDC at the same time.

There is a hole, on the gear box, (near to the starter motor) u have to insert a pin there, So that fly wheel will get locked. U have to rotate the engine while the hole on fly wheel aligns with the hole on gear box.

8mm (I think) pin locks the flywheel with pistons 1 and 4 at TDC, and the cams either have to be with no1 inlet and exhaust valves both slightly open, or no 4 inlet and exhaust both slightly open, with the 'square' on the camshaft parallel to the head face.
Camshaft locking tool is not needed - it won't move, but try to remember to remove the flywheel pin afterwards.
