Just discovered one of these on each wheel when i went to change the wheels today, looked everywhere in the car and can't find the other part

Any one got any tips as to where to get one or take it off, I tried a sledge and a punch but no joy.

Oh those things, i used a 19mm 12point socket, tapping stick (large-ish) and a 24" breaker bar when i lost the key to mine on a previous car, longest part of the job was getting the bolts back out of the socket in the vice.

The E30 still has the origional locking nuts with a key..... fiddly little buggers they are :?

arnt those mcguard locking nuts? halfords do those. big branches with a fitting bay might have a skeleton set? worth asking.

failing that, does the previous owner know where it is?

The top shiney bit is hardend, they just blunt the cheaper locknut removal tools and the proper ones cost a fortune, the ford ones are Mcguard iirc but there is no master key.

ford do use the same design.

sure its a mcgard one you have there.
http://mcgard-europe.de/englisch/automobil.htm

they are the best you can buy just about.
i destroyed about 3 chisels at work trying to get a set of these off.....
because the chisel wouldnt make a dent in it, just kept bouncing off. what i ended up doing was using a die grinder to make a knotch in the edge of the head for the chisel to sit in so i could whack them round......

make sure you tighten the other 3 bolt TIGHT as it will take a little pressure off the locking nut when you try to undo it!
