ok i have a 1987 325 bmw and recently the car has stopped starting it will bump start. i think i have traced the issue to one of 2 things dying battery or dying alternator. with my cheap multimeter i took a voltage reading once the car is running off the battery terminals and this was 11.98 so basicly 12v witht the engine running i expected slightly higher the wipers become slugish if the engine is off.
any help please thanks

Def sounds like an alternator charging issue. With the engine running you should get at least 12.5v+ and at least 13.5v when the engine revs increase. These values should be acheived even if the battery was flat and the engine running. Could check the regulator bushes on the back of the alternator.

Clean up a patch on the alternator casing, start the engine, and place your meter between the cleaned up patch and a good body earth (like the rear bonnet bracket). Any measurable voltage present?
Take the brush pack off the back of the alternator, and check the condition of the carbon brushes.
