If it goes just over the half way mark it's NOT overheating! It's overheating when it approaches the red sector.
Check the small brass nuts on the back of the instrument cluster are tight.

Hi,
Providing the temp gauge doesnt keep rising while driving along and it stays just past the middle it is ok. If you stop and crawl in slow moving traffic and the temp begins to rise then suspect definately the viscous fan unit £30 at Euro car parts.I had similar with my 318i in slow moving traffic and the only way to lower the temp was to open the windows and put the heater on full blast, this will help to lower the engine temperature. My problem was the viscous and since i have changed it all is ok.
Good luck
Pete

If its not the spring on the thermostat starting to relax its the viscous fan coupler thats aged... nothing to worry about for the moment mate, you wont damage the engine unless its very close to.. or in the red.
