hi, i am going to do this mod as my central locking is now playing up. my question is how do i get to the speaker properly without damaging the plastic cover?. thank you
for the benefit of other searches, here is the mod
Remove the driver's footwell speaker and find two seperate red/black wires going to two seperate pins of the driver's door socket. Cut both of these wires and join together the two ends which don't go to the socket.

Remove the plastic kick panels - a single phillips screw on the drivers' side, same screw plus two x 8mm hex screws for the bonnet release lever on the px side.

So what happens when you turn the key in any of the other locks? (Before and after your 'mod').

I have the same issue... Check for wear on the L-shaped piece on the inboard end of the barrel, and the fork this sits in. ZimmerBimmer will do you a repair/replace kit for not a lot of coin if this is the cause.

nothing if i remember properly, i did find out that one little key on my key ring was for the passenger side which i thought was for the boot, and the driver side key is no good on the passenger side.
i tried the mod but was no different, i then took out the ecu which had some corrosion on the pins, cleaned these up and put it back but still no different. we then reversed the mod incase i done it wrong, still no different, then took door panel off to see inside and we found the switch by barrel is loose.
i also tried the passenger door just now, i can open and close the lock but no central locking.

this is defo my problem, i just dont know how to fix it, we took it apart and it seems its not tight enough and keeps coming loose so having a poor contact with the switch. zimmer is away for awhile as i have been trying to get some other bits. we will look at your sugestion again and see where we are.

all sorted, was able to fix this issue with brianmoores tips in earlier threads. thanks
here was the fix brianmoore had for this problem for anyone using search.
This can probably be sorted without any new parts. This is a standard procedure on any E30 that comes my way.
First of all, to improve access to the lock, unscrew the single bolt that holds the bottom of the window glass guide in place, pull the metal part down a bit, and it will unclip just below glass level. You can then swing the bottom of the guide up out the way towards the middle of the door.
When you get it out, first make sure the swivelling bit with the over centre action on the back end of the key barrel is all working freely and is well greased, then slide the bracket for the dead lock microswitch into place on the key barrel and bend the middle of the microswitch arm very slightly to take up 15 years of wear, and get that part working properly.
If you look at the alloy arm on the back of the key barrel you will see it is worn by contact with the steel fork it engages with on the door catch.
Bend this steel fork slightly so that it engages with an unworn part of the alloy arm, grease everything, and reassemble.
Your driver's door lock should now work as new.
If the unlock/lock is still a bit hit and miss, then try adjusting the lock motor a little in its slotted holes.
