Alloys advice

Hi all, I've gat a 87' 325ise that was lowered by around 30mm by the previous owner on a set of Pi springs. It currently sits on 17" wolfrace alloys with 205/40/ZR17 tyres. The rims are so badly curbed I will be buying a new set soon but I was wondering what you guys think - should I stay with the 17" alloys or should I move down to a 16" wheel with either 225/45/16 or 205/50/16 or 215/45/16 tyres in order to get a slightly softer ride? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
