hi guys just a quick question,i have just finished my IS conversion on my 316i,when the car is running its a bit lumpy,it kinda hezitates when you try and rev it,while it was running i was just checking all the, hoses and if there where any air leakes,i started checking the leads,i pulled number 1 lead out and the plug hole was full of either petrol or oil car did not change idle or get worse, put it back in,then i slowly pulled the rest out one by one, they were dry and the idle changes and runs even more lumpy, could the coil be at fault, not sparking 1 properly.any help would be greatful thanks INDY :?

The oil around the spark plug is just from a leak in the cam cover seal

Mine was the same . Be careful running the car like that as there is a fire risk, or so I'm told. A mate ran a 5 series with the same problem and the engine went up in flames. Changed mine the day after hearing that story. Rocker cover gasket set will only be buttons and take 5 mins to change.

so could the coil be at fault why it is running lumpy, the car backfires when you slightly rev it,when i pull number 1 lead out the idle stays the same, when i take the rest out the car runs worse,rab-doo i have recently done the headgasket and the rest of the gaskets, thanks INDY

No, the coil should be fine. Whats happening, is the oil that has leaked out of the cover gasket has surrounded the sprak plug and has run down the thread and onto the electrodes of the plug. Damp electrodes will not spark, therefore the cylinder will not 'run'. Take the plug out, wash the spark plug bore through with a small amount of brake cleaner, dry the plug, fix the leak and all will be ok

Happened to mine about 2 years ago

And yes, there is a fire risk

Check the leads on 1 & 2, failing that try a known good coil pack.

Sounds like the leads could be fecked.
Should you require a replacement set i have a good set from an iS here.
