E30 Zone

I retro fitted a complete cruise control set up today as well as a full OBC set up the OBC is working sweet as a nut but the cruise control isn't.

There's a blue/yellow wire that fits in the rear of the instument panel into the green connector which point does it go in as there are three options, Other than that is there anyone in the northampton area that may be able to help me out as it's driving me nuts!!!

have you checked all other plugs are connected ie behind the glovebox and on the module also is your car manual or auto if its manual have you fitted the clutch switch if not have joined the 2 wires together if not the system wont work. also another thing what speeds are you testing it at my system only works over 30mph.

The wire for the clocks is for speed - any pin will do.

Power is feed from the options panel in the rear coroner of the glovebox behind the black panel.
On 4-Cylinder cars, the power feed is not present so you'll have to tap into another 12V source elsewhere- there are loads.

Earth must also be fitted- you'll see a point in that area too.

You need the clutch switch and brake switch to be connected so that the Cruise disengages when you press either.

I have done all this except my loom does not reach the brake switch so I must tap into that circuit somwhere somehow...

I cleaned all the connections earlier, I have not road tested it yet but the actuator "clicks" when the ignition is on and the earth is connected so I'm guessing I have power now, Will road test tomorrow!!

I have a 2lt 6 pot, manual and the clutch switch. I'm I correct in thinking that i DO NOT need to tap into the brake switch circuit. Guess i'll find out in the morning!!

Wiring goes from the clutch switch to the brake light switch, in series, so that pushing either pedal disengages the cruise.

Are you saying that if I have the clutch switch installed then the brake switch will also disengage the Cruise?

How can it be in series if neither the clutch switch or loom was there in the first place?

Of course the cruise control should disengage when the brake pedal is pressed! Some gizmo opening the throttle wide when you're trying to slow the car is not a good idea!!

IIRC, as pointed out, 4-pot cars do not have provision for cruise at that panel (slot is there, no pins) hence tapping into the brake wire (green/red?) somewhere within reach of the cruise loom.

If you've connected it all up properly (triple-check!) then suspect the ECU and/or actuator arm.

Try a known working ECU first.

my 4pot did the only thing i had to do was make a bracket for it to sit on the throttle body no splicing of wires needed

Well, I've seen 2 to 3 four pots with no provision so I guessed it was a 6-Cyl option or something.

Can't understand the logic of BMW not having the provision there -]the ETK does not show it as an option on 318i/318iS so that's cool that you had it.

I bought a new loom, clutch switch/bracket, stalk and actuator and a used ECU only to find this out at the point of fitting.
Now I have to hack into the wiring at a place where you don't really want to be hacking into.

I'm quitting for the time being, I've checked and re-checked all the connections, when I earth the system via the single loose earth wire under the glove box the actuator "clicks", does the same when connecting and disconnecting the clutch sensor, I can only see it being 1 of 3 things now, either a faulty actuator, faulty control box, Faulty stalk (That'll be most of the components then, lol). I've tried picking up the speed from all 3 points on the green connection block on the back of the speedo so I'm guessing it's not that!!

Hopfully I'll be able to find a few spares I can lone to test the mentioned parts!!

This is something I was unaware of, so I've just checked a couple of scrap four pot looms, and the wiring and pins are all present and correct.
You do occasionally come across a lesser E30 with bits of loom missing though - the wire for the seat heaters is often missing for instance.

Aha!!!

That's my problem... For the last couple of months I was checking bits out to see could I sort the problem of mine not working on the iS

Difficult to add those pins?

have a few spare 12V accessory panel single pins to get the feed from but how would you suggest tapping into the brake switch and where?

I've got the cruise control working at last, I replaced the main control box and it's working great!!
