Snoops
What e30 exactly did you get the flywheel off of?
I'm wondering if it came off an early car like your prop as they may be different and may require a different release bearing!
Engine conversions, Auto to manual conversions, parts, servicing etc etc... For anything e30 call 07718 901737

One more thing which car did the slave cylinder you are using come off?
It definatly sounds from your description clutch related.

the prop is from an early car and I think the flywheel is too, I will be changing the centre bearing on the prop for a facelift one though

1st second reverse are hard, second is a real pain to get into and third and fourth are just very tight, haven't tried fifth yet

what is the likely cause? release bearing?

re: the slave cylinder, I don't know as I didn't do that part but if there wasn't one included with the bits my dad got off you then I think the original 318i one was used

also with the clutch just a little bit away from the floor when on a normal e30 the clutch is engaged and you are able to change gear, on this I can't change gear, it makes the screeching sound and the clutch has to be right on the floor

Re-bleeding the clutch might help? The bite point should effectively be higher than that...

the biting point is much higher where it should be, it's just that the gear doesn't engage properly unless the clutch is full depressed

there is also a tinny metal grinding sound when changing gear

can anyone help

1st i would replace the slave cylinder with one off a 325i as you said that your gearbox came from a 325i. The one fitted right now is from your 318i then rebleed system.

If that dont work then you have a headache of taking gearbox off and checking the fly wheel is correct.

I had a similar problem, although not after an engine swap. I changed to slave/master cylinders and that fixed it. Parts are cheap as well.
