Overfilled oil

A friend of mine (ahem :o: ) has an E30 325i Cab being a bit of a bell end, he has overfilled the oil slightly.

The oil level is now about 5-7mm above the max mark on the dipstick and you get a nice cloud of blue smoke on startup which stops soon after.

Have I - I mean has he  - buggered anything up?

An over filled engine can create problems, so "your friend" would be advised to drain some of the oil out to correct the excess amount.

Ditto, drain some out, thats over 2 inches and if the crank webs or conrods are running in it He'll have alot of black air filled mayonnaise being pumped around the engine......not good... :(

Thanks Chase - I realise that I need to drain some out....I'm not quite in Trigger's league.

Its just that I cant do it until I get home and I need to drive the car to get it home. I was wondering if it would bugger it up driving it.

BTW, it looks like Bilun777 may have thought i said 57mm over max. It is 5 to 7 mm over so not quite that bad.

I only noticed the puff of smoke at work this morning when I started it. I assume that once some has been drained out, the extra will burn off and the puff of smoke will dissapear?

Yeah it should, can't you borrow beg or steal a spanner at work to sort it now though? you litterally only need to drain out a bit of oil. 5-7 mm is probably only a couple hundred mm, could catch it in an old milk bottle.

Yeah, I'll see what I can do. I work in an office so might be tricky!

Cheers guys, I hope I haven't broken it!

millilitre even? :)

Personally, I would leave it. Being an M20 it wont be in there for long :P

Yes you're right.... I wondered how you could have accidentally put in half a gallon of oil? :o:

I didn't manage to drain some off at work so had to drive it home. No puff of smoke at start up so looks like DanThe is correct! S'all good....
