Hi guys i'm looking for some bulbs for my other car.
has anyone tried either of these? i need the best 55/60 H4's.

For both links mate, i have used Osram super bilux before and found them to be better than most cheap bulbs (i payed £8 for the pair at a local motor factor)

Osram cool blue are good too if your after a white light, with you saying H4 though i can't recomend HID,

I wouldn't waste my money on trying different bulbs, Spend a bit more initially and invest in an HID kit.

why can't a mini run HIDs?

cost with comparisson to the vehicle cost isn't worth it and its illegal and i wanna keep the car legal! just after a good quality bulb to go with my new headlamps

Keep some normal bulbs in the glove box if you're worried about the MOT.

HIDs aren't really suitable for mini headlamps, unless they are the D2R type, as they are the reflector type.
Ebay H1/H4 HIDs are going to cause glare, unless fitted to projector type lamps.
Back when I had Minis, the standard headlamps were 45/40W tungsten lamps!! Mine had H4 halogen units from a Volvo truck, along with one of the first alternators (from a 2 week old Merc.), and was a step change from the standard lamps of a greater magnitude than going from halogens to HID.

Out of those 2 bulbs you have put links to, i would still go for the Osram.

To me, burning less fillament at higher temperatures in a smaller space means it wont last very long.

Also the only H4 HID burners i have seen that give high and low beams use a moveing collar on a solenoid to alter the beam pattern..... hellish expensive and still no promises that the beam pattern will be good enough to pass a MOT.

Well, you're wrong. Look up the science on how a halogen bulb works, and you'll see why.
I think there are H4 HIDs available where just the low beam is a HID burner, with a conventional halogen bulb tacked on beside it for the high beam.
I would imagine the beam patterns aren't too impressive!

The science of how a halogen bulb works is not somthing i have ever thought to look up, but 1 thing we all appear to agree on, HID+normal reflector=bad beam pattern, and all the hassle that brings.





Edit, now i partially understand the hologen cycle, i couldnt have been more wrong, but i would still go with the osram because for me theyre tried and tested, and theyre cheaper
