320i tuning with 325i parts,

Does anybody have any experience with tuning the 2.0 with 325i parts?

the AFM exhaust sides are as big on both,
so in theory a complete 2.5 front install with M30 maf should be possible,

anybody have dyno info on such mods,

I gteched the 2.0 yesterday to reach a average of 9.1 0-60mph( with a 3,25LSD) and 17.2 1/4mile, and assuming 2800lbs 122hp is beeing made, I know it has a substantional vacuum leak, and tomorrow the dyno will tell me the actual horspower.

Again to the question, has anybody modded a 2.0 and what where the gains,
IԚ´m looking for any changes, mileage, 0-60, hp/torque

3.25LSD? Typo?

nope I used it with my S50B30 motor,
110kmh in second gear,
125kmh@3000rpm in 5th gear

IԚ´m rebuilding the S50 and am going to play with this 2.0 while itԚ´s in there

jhonno - the gearbox that comes with an s50/M50 has a 1:1 fifth gear instead of the E30's 1:1 fourth gear, so you need to use a much lower diff ratio. ( I use a 3.19)

upgrading to a 325i throttle body has gotten pretty impressive gains for some people

Leaving the 325i TB attached to the engine it came from gets better gains.

what are you basing that on? I havent done the swap myself, but others on here have with great results. the 325i unit has roughly 50% more crossectional area...

mate - he's saying leave the tb on the 325i lump n put the whole thing in instead

 jhonno for a 4potter you sure dont give up easily

the 325 tb can be fitted easily enough to the 2.0, as long as the manifold is 'ground' to match

some of us happen to think that the 2.0 is worth the effort

I got this engine for free!!
and I have a complete 325i intake manifold and tb + intake boot, so I was wondering what to expect,

I will inform you ladz on the developments as they evolve

first tuning session

replacing the TB on a Ԛ´89 320i motor with a Ԛ´87 325i TB

320i measured 66mm
325i measured 74mm

AFM ex port is identical in size,

result if true,
better throttle response

before specs by gtech
0-60 : 9,1 best (9,5-9,6 regular)
0-400m : 17,2 best (17,5 regular)
power : 91kw - 123hp

after specs by gtech
0-60 : 8,56 best (9,01 regular)
0-400m : 17,01best (17,2 regular)
power : 93kw - 126hp

dyno measured yesterday
92.6kw
167nm

would like to dyno again but itԚ´s $100 so getch will do.

Overall alot better throttle response,
next IԚ´ll swap the intake manifolds and do more testing.

did you grind out the intake manifold to match the bigger TB or just bolt it straight on?

Boots_Walker wrote:did you grind out the intake manifold to match the bigger TB or just bolt it straight on?
bolted straight on.
I left both gaskets on as the 325i one seemed to be so big that it actually would open a way in from behind th tb on the bottom, i.e the manifold is not big enough to cover the whole hole of the 325i tb,

thanks for this nice thread Gunni, some of us 2.0 boys appreciate it hehehe, I myself am currently in the process of researching on some supercharger setups for the short stroke M20 8)

it is surtenly short stroke at only 66mm,
at 86mm and 66mm stroke it would have 2300cc exatly
it would be rev happy for sure :)

When I get the chance to swap to a 2.5 manifold IԚ´ll post the results

glad to see that someone is willing to put some effort into the 320! i'll follow this thread with interest

Brian - to fit a 325i engine into a 320i is a total pain in the arse. It's at least a day of back breaking toil, expense and you'll still have a weedy small casing diff ready to cough.

You'd have to be daft to do it. Just buy a sodding 325i instead.

A throttle body however is a simple and ultra cheap way of making a cheap and cheerful 320i go a lot better. BMW restricted the 2 litre for insurance purposes so all we do is de-restrict them. I ground out the manifold on mine and found that although there isn't enough meat in the bottom of the manifold, it can be radiused off to smooth the air flow.

Throttle body and rubber inlet bellows, Ԛ£10 from a scrapyard. You will need a chip to make it work properly. Mine came from ChippedUk and works a treat. On a 3.64 diff it pulls 60 mph in second gear easily enough. With a 3.91 diff it would probably beat a 318iS and give a 325i a fright.
No, it's not as fast as a good 325i but it's not THAT far behind. 320i's are worth about half the value of a 325i, so it's worth doing.

the gains with the 325iTB look good, and will probably be better if the manifold was 'ported' to reduce the step as much as possible

definately makes me more determined to stick with m20b20 'wrongness' and have me a responsive engine thats a bit 'different' from the usual fayre.

I'm not after out and out power, but i want to improve what i consider to be a great engine

how different is the opening on the intake manifolds?
Is it impossible to properly match them without resorting to weld?

   so i like it

at least i'm happy enough with it to not be toying with fitting a 'Dcik enhancer' of an engine

No shame in being inferior then? Fairdo's

Mine is 4 pot wrongness (if it were an m42 or s14 it'd be ok) that kept up with the m20b20 wrongness... plus i wanna go Scooby bashing in my '316i'

The bangs per buck argument is a good one. Plus 320's are more likely to have been gently treated, so the value is enhanced even more.

Andy also said " ... BMW restricted the 2 litre for insurance purposes ..." which makes sense. And presumably the capacity was engineered for certain countries' tax regulations, like Italy I believe.

It really is a nice engine, just needs the airflow. And if you want ultimate power rather than a thoroughly nice car, get a shit hot hatch. :soap:

not inferior, just packin a bigger wad

the 316i is a good engine!keep it and mod it  i think too many folk are too interested in followin the heard with the 325i and not putting enough of their own personality into their cars

Update

325i manifold installed with stock injectors and fpr.

rought idle,
alot better throttle response and while driving better throttle response.

performance :
0-60 10.3
hp by gtech : 82kw (111hp)
what is blatanly obvious is that itԚ´s running either very rich or very lean,

IԚ´m thinking the later,
IԚ´ll install a 3.0fpr and adjust the afm for idle and part

update later

sounds like quite a drop in performance  :(

but as you say an increase in fuel pressure should help-and increased throttle response is A GOOD THING!

keep up the good work :D

WeԚ´ll see, IԚ´m going to put in a B25 AFM as well today and see what that does, the nafter that IԚ´m putting in a 3bar fpr

I think my air filter is clogged up, on snap throttles the air box sounds to be choking alot.

Hey Gunni, again thanks for doing this for the 2.0l boys, get that 3bar FPR on, I am really curious to seeing the results  also put a cone on , just for the tests sake hehe

I donԚ´t think I wanna bother with a cone, as I would have to build a heatshield and such,
but if I donԚ´t have any free time then who knows

I have fitted a 325 TB onto my 320 inlet manifold. I would like to know whether I should fit the 325 AFM as well or stick with the 320 AFM??

Any advice?

Has anyone done this?
