Hi mate, I had the same problem,
Check the connections at the diff. My wires had a loose connection.
If you accelarate suddenly the speedo just dropped, until you released the pedal.

Have a look

Good luck

Copper is a strange metal in that if it is repeatably bent it changes its structure from a soft, ductile metal into a hard, brittle one. This process can be reversed by heating the copper to a dull red heat and letting it cool slowly.
Twenty years of vibration makes the copper wire of the tail that goes to the diff. on an E30 change into this brittle form and break internally.
If you pull each individual wire gently, you will probably find one that stretches inside its plastic sheath, or has broken away right at the entry to the connector.
Since you can't practically heat the copper to red heat and reuse it, the cure is to replace completely at least the last 12" of wire to the diff. , complete with plug.
If you look around the headlamp area of a scrap E30, you will find a suitable plug and length of wire.

The foglights use the same plug dont they? And they have more length of wire to play with as well IIRC.
