CAN ANYONE HELP !!!!!!!

They are a bastard. You need an engine crane to lift the engine up off its mounts and even then it won't clear the oil pump. So you need to drop the oil pump down into the sump and pull the sump out - don't forget the pump driveshaft.

Andyboy - you need less mechanical sympathy!
E30Till - it's not quite that bad:
Drain the oil!
Remove the plastic cover under the radiator.
Remove the bellhousing extension at the rear of the engine - 4xTorx bolts and 4x13mm hex head bolts. You can now see all the sump bolts.
Remove the oil level sender and engine earth strap from the right front of the sump.
Slacken ALL the sump bolts 1/2 a turn before undoing ANY of them completely.
It's probably a good idea to unbolt the radiator at this point - this allows it to follow the engine up, preventing stress on the coolant pipes.
With all the sump bolts out, remove the nuts from the bottom of the engine mounts and jack the engine up until you can wiggle the sump out. You may need a bit of wood on top of the jack, as it needs to go up quite a long way - if you have a strut brace fitted you'll need to remove it!
Clean the old gasket off - a sharp 1" wood chisel works well for this, but be careful not to cut into either the gasket face or your fingers
Stick the new gasket to the new sump, wiggle into position, check the gasket hasn't shifted, and bolt it on (finger tight until all bolts are in, then tighten in cross-pattern).
Drop the engine slowly, making sure the mounts are lined up with their holes as it goes down and replace the nuts on the engine mounts. Tighten to 'bloody tight'.
Replace the oil level sender and reconnect the earth strap.
Replace the bellhousing extension and plastic undertray.
If you unbolted the radiator, secure it again.
Refill with oil (this is a good opportunity to change the oil and filter
)

Thanks for that mate you really sound like you now what you are doin. i have just brought the car and had a little rear end action in it moiunted the kerb and cracked the sump i brought a new 1 the weekend attempted to fit it but couldnt get to the last bolt which is above the subframe so decided to give up and ask about thought it was going to be a piece of piss but now i wish i had gone to a garage insted do you now anyone who can give a help in hand ?
And how exactly do you wiggle the sump out when the weight of the engine is on a jack? Where do you jack it up? Front pulley?handpaper wrote: and jack the engine up until you can wiggle the sump out.
Use an engine crane and lift it. To get the sump off without removing the oil pump is a nightmare - the oil pump is just some 13mm bolts so you may as well do it properly and not risk buggering it. I've done this a couple of times on a ramp and it's a cow of a job.
Also make sure you get a proper 'hard' sump gasket and not one of the shitty cork ones that pop out.

Can't agree with you here, Andyboy. I've never had any problem removing the sump on a M20 once the engine mounts have been undone and the engine lifted.
Alternative way is to support the body and drop the front subframe down.

That's the way fella, cheers - i used to deliver to the "Dunmow Inn" though i guessing it's not there anymore due to it sitting on a huge piece of land and housing seems to be at full flow around the A120AndyG wrote:you're about 40 mins or so Nelly if you go via the A10/A414 & past the airport. Easy run though.
