Guys

Im hearing alot of talk about mega squirt and i know a few zoners who have it.

I want to know more about the good/ bad points of it.

Also is there any benefit in having it on a standard lump?? Would it increase power etc on a standard lump??

Is it something that i could install myself??

What sort of cost is this setup?? Installed or supplied with instructions.

Thanks for your help

NO!! the megasquirt brain is better than ANY chip out there. its a fully stand-alone programmable ECU, written and controlled by you, the user...

there is no 'chip'. there's no motronic anymore. the MS replaces it all...

your whole engine becomes an entirely different donkey with MS

go to www.megasquirt.info and read that before posting anything else on this thread...

Aha, so no AFM you say? That's interesting... and the price? Together with installation for 320i touring? By PM if necessary. And I hope it doesn't involve driving to John o'Groats and walking back to Luton, to walk back in a year and pick up the finished car?

Ms can run the fuel pump

2 ways to install, rip all the old loom out and start again... or splice the new harness into the old, and leave the moronic unplugged.

MS is the way to go, but there are some compromises to be made.

@ Matt G, no idea dude, I only ever got one, and thats on my rear window.

that "plug in" kit is a bit spurious, gutted M3.1 ECU with an MS loom tapped into it, does the seller not realise the stock TPS is no good for MS ? plus the std coolant temp sensor means the code needs altering for MS to read it correctly, The IAT is on the AFM on the stock setup

When you say you want to understand MS, for me that means you want info on how it works, simply put, it works the same as the existing ECU, but uses a MAP senor, TPS or combination of both to calculate the fuel and spark required for any given load site, the moronic does this also, but uses the AFM flap, and lower resoloution to achieve the same goals.( edit you can use a MAF or AFM on MS if you desired )

you may use any PWM idle valve( 318 unit ) or a simple slider arrangement as per jetronic, the point is , to some extent you'll be doing your own R+D on anything you retrofit yourself, unless you have experience in the field.

MS is far more flexable and tweakable, but only if you know how, you can in fact totally destroy your engine with incorrect settings, and there are a lot that need setting up other than the basic fuel and ignition parameters.

Compromises:

Ok, the setup you have now has its faults, but BMW/Bosch spent Millions getting it to be what it is, so although MS may be tuned for better power, smoother delivery and better response, unless you spend £1000's mapping it you may find you have to live with some quirks- no fault of the sysytem itself, merely costs dictate that certain settings will only ever be "OK" not "perfect"

Example, cold start ( everyones favorite)

MS cannot use the std ICV unless its an M40 unit, the current is too much for any aftermarket ECU to handle, so, you remove that from the system, and replace with........ TBH, I use nothing, but I have mapped the cold start enrichment and its coolio, to achieve the fast idle I use ignition timing in conjuction with a look up table, the colder it is, the more idle advance is used to achieve a good idle condiotion, as the temps come back to normal, the timning is pulled back to the value in the spark map, and the fuel additions peter out to leave the car running of the map itself, no trim values =/- unless specified by closed loop feedback for the 02 sensor ( if fitted )

Buy a kit off ebay and get stuck in, you may be lucky and its all good, but regardless of cost, you'll need to either map it personally, or pay someone else to do so to achive a pefect result, either way its time, and unless you have it ( lots of it ) and access to a WB02 and laptop+ friend to drive, you'll pay again to achieve your intended goals.

Now, another thread has pointed out that I have a conflict of interest here, so I'll add no more.
