hi my 325i is starting to get a bit of tappet rattle.I wandered down to my local BMW dealer who informed me that it as BMW policy NOT to give out such technical information!
so does any one know the inlet and exhaust settings for my engine?
So i can go back to my smooth 6 motering.

hi i did read the article but it might sound silly but do you set the clearance of both inlet and exhaust to
the 0.25mm? Its just that this is a strange engine to me as i used to be a 4pot man.
thanks in adv.

You will need to use the rule of 7 mate, when number 1 is rocking set 6, number 4 rocking set 3 and so on

you have to set the tappets when the engine is at normal operateing temprature, turn the engine off then set them with a feeler gauge. watch out you dont burn yourself. advice came from a bmw tech who set them when they were cold(first time doing them) was told to do them again. it was quite funny watching my tec mate darren doing them on mine, he pluged something into the black round thing(where you re-set the lights) and was makeing the starter motor turn the engine over so he could set them. amazeing really.

The problem i had was turning the cam, had to put it in gear and rock the car back and forward until the cam was in the right positions.

I like E30bmlover's way better tho, seems allot easier :D

he liturally set them in 5 minutes mate! it was like a lead with a spark plug on the end, everytime he hit it on the top of the engine the starter motor turned a little bit.

Thanks for the info. set them cold, then checked after warm up and they needed resetting to the 0.3mm.
now running perfect (for now).
Great site.
