Yes you can, im not very good at describing things but ill have a go....
Behind the mirror is a disc with notches in it. You need to turn this disc and it loosens the mirror glass. On the underside of the mirror housing, there is a small hole, if you look in here you can just see the edge of the disc (looks like a cog). You need to put a small flat head screwdriver in the hole and maunally turn the cog and this will loosen the mirror glass.

Hope this helps.

Usually easier to point the mirror as far upwards as it will go, and look under the lower edge of the glass.
You will be able to see the teeth mentioned, and be able to push them sideways with a small screwdriver.
Be carefull not to damage the mirror housing's paint finish.
Be sure to push the disc fully to the locking position when replacing the glass, or it will fall out after a couple of miles!

Hi The mirror is easy to come out if you do as already described but make sure you put it back on properly as it WILL come off as I have found to my cost.

That sounds more like the little plastic clip that retains the rack that moves the mirror is broken.

If its any help to any one the mirror glass turns out to be the same as E36 but attaches differently to motor housing, just push straight on no messing under the mirror! :)
