Can anyone help?
Just had the head changed on my 2.5 due to it being cracked,
its all back together now and drives ok, but on idle it chugs and u can smell fuel real bad. it idles at the right speed just very lumpy but as soon as u give it some revs its fine.

If the ECU has been disconnected from the battery, then it will take 100miles to learn idle settings again.
If this isn't it, try getting it on a gas analyser and setting up the AFM bypass.

I would also check the valve clearances first.
Happened on mine.

And you're 100% that it's timed up right?

i'm pretty sure it's the timing. i have experienced the same problem... when it's idling rough and you stamp on the gas hard can you hear the valves knocking or something like that?

I'm afraid so...and some of the symptoms you've described would suggest this.
If you're lucky, it'll just be a matter of timing it up.

right cleaned everything with 2 cans of carb cleaner, still no joy,
spoke to person who did the job and he said he set the rocker gap to 0.20 insted of 0.25
as it was warm when he did it.

Eh? Should be a greater clearance when the engine is warm, ie 0.3mm.

the backfire upon configues to me its running rich hence backfiring/burning excess fuel
a guy i sold an engine too had similar idlie problems and it turned out to be valve clearances that were way out. if the car was timed wrong surely it would run a lot worse than on idle and let off
start with simple, basic things first before considering drastic stuff

My timing belt was out on my e30 and it had some of these issue's listed, I got Stuartgallafant to do my belt and tensioner and it run so much better since, It feels like a different car and more responce

Considering Selling the Cabby, looks like its gonna go

Might be something as simple as being one tooth out. Not hard to check.
