BAUR Roof Screw Conundrum

Hey all,

I'm currently having my brain bent into shapes that's it's not designed for trying to find the dimensions of the screws for the original roof fitting kit for the BAUR E30 TC2.

I have the roof on and all is good,however it turns out that the screws that are in place are not the original ones and subsequently the Tonnau top will not fit onto the snap on clips because the screws are incorrect.

Originally the roof screws were fitted with this part:

Unfortunatly since the demise of the BMW Classic shop this kit is no longer available and I am currently trying to locate the 3 different types of screws individually.This is tricker than it sounds as the heads of the screws all need to be smaller than 5.7mm in Diameter in order to fit inside the snap-on clip.

If anybody has any information on this it would be greatly appreciated.

I have taken out the screws I need and measured them up.

There are three different types that are needed.

Wierdly the first flat head screw has a thread which is 4.7mm, thisdefinetly can't be correct as it's not a metric size.I'm assuming this screw should be an M4 like the others.

The challenge is trying to find appropriate screws which have heads with a smaller diameter than 5.9mm and shallow enough to fit into the recess in the snap-on clips.After searching online this seems to be quit e tricky.

If any zoners could confirm the actual correct dimensions that would be

I could not find these for love nor money but they are 5mm threads with heads that are turned down to suit to fit inside the poppers.
I used stainless steel screws and turned down the heads .
The bolts are always a bit less than the thread size on all bolts.
Ask Brutus on here he may be able to help.
If you manage to fit a kit then let the world know please, I have been trying for years.

I had a feeling they would be M5, but thats confusing as the ones that are in there are at the moment are M4, so I'm not sure how they're actually holding! I also found this part on ebay, which is meant to be a genuine screw, and it's a 3.5 x 16....?!

I'm also ideally trying to find a black equivalent as I think it looks a bit better and subtler with my blue hood.

I've been looking here to try and find a suitable replacement.

Carl is your man and he is a top guy mate.
You really are best finding a fixing kit as a lot of these fastenings are pretty much custom to the Baur.
The kit also comes with black plastic covers as well.

I have actually found the perfect black replacements for the snap-on part.I literally just need the appropriate screws that will fit inside.I've also just ordered some samples for what should be ideal replacemnts for the black caps.

So you're 100% that all the screws and bolts should be an M5?

What would be perfect if there's someone with a BAUR who has the original screws and can measure them

I have a Baur and just did measure the main ones at the rear and they are M5 x 0.75 a standard metric thread.
The rest from what I recall from a couple of years ago were a mixture from other guys over the years just sticking what they had in at the time.
A proper fixing kit is the way to go, I tried calling Sytner today and the parts depo was closed but I have left a request via e-mail.

M5 x 0.75 is a standard coarse metric thread.
M5 is 5mm outside/inside diameter of the thread.
0.75 is the pitch of the thread only in the case of the M5 thread.
Have a look on line for the technical details of other threads but the Metric system is worlds beyond other stuff, not saying other stuff is rubbish though.
With the metric coarse thread , mostly used in industry, take the pitch from the diameter and you have the tapping drill, easy yeah ???
I have been a toolmaker since 1976 and Metric is the only system that should normally be considered as it is so easy and logical to use. I was trained and used both English and metric and I know which I like to use.

1 kilometre = 1000 metres
1 metre = 1000 mm
1mm = 1000 microns

1 tonne = 1000kgs
1 kg = 1000grams

1 litre of water = 1 kg
1 cubic metre of water =1000kg / 1 tonne

Certainly quite the rant indeed their Mart!

As a joiner I am most certainly grateful for the metric system myself!Also a pet hate when people measure things in cm and not mm...drives me crazy!

I wasn't sure what your were referring to in the second part of the measurement, as it would usually be the length.What is the length of those screw btw? 16mm?

Sytner dont have any even though their site on Google says they do.
I will check out the dims on the bolts for you.

The bolts are 5mm thread , 16mm from under the head to the end and the head is 6.50 diameter .
The heads I turned down at work so you will be hard pressed to find them, sorry.
Please use a very good quality stainless steel for these and also for the poppers which they seat in.
Try and avoid "Complete Shit " from China if possible, there are very good guy`s in this country and Europe too but you have to make sure of the quality.
A fixing kit is the Holy Grail but good luck on this and let me know where to find one please .

Do you have any more info on the screws that are on the side of the hood as they are different to the bolts from my understanding?

As far as I can tell the screws are identical to the ones also used on an e28 BAUR TC1.

I'm going to try and source the most appropriate stainless parts I can.

In the unlikely event that I come across somewhere to source a full kit i'll most definetly get the info on here.It's a bit frustrating that a lot of online suppliers say they have them in stock, but then actually don't.This I think is because they were all sourced from the BMW Classics department in Germany which is longer in operation.
