I tried to reset the service indicator light using the usual wire trick but this time it didn’t work. I think this means the SI battery is knackered, is this correct? And is replacing the battery as much of a bastard as it sounds?

Thanks. I've always used the same approach so I know im doing it correctly, its just stopped working now and i think this is because the SI battery needs replacing.

The service indicator wont reset if the batteries are done and in my case the rev counter was also out of action. You will be able to identify the batteries once you have the cluster apart and important to put the same type batteries back in. Not a difficult job but you will have to solder in the replacements. Some years ago I brought wire extensions from the terminals inside the cluster to a battery holder outside of the cluster so I never have to remove it to do this job again.

Good, its a job that you have to take your time with. Lots of tutorials on the net about removing the cluster. Make sure you have a towel at hand to protect the cluster glass. Having small hands to remove the plugs at the back of the cluster is an advantage. Take photos anyway to make sure you dont forget the layout of the batteries. On my 316i, the batteries are Varta 1.2volt Nicads but yours may be different. It is nice to have the indicator lights working as the should and a job worth doing.

Removing the cluster is made so much easier if the steering wheel is removed, it’s a five minute job using a 22mm socket, mark the shaft and wheel to realign.

Doing this way makes it a doddle to remove the plugs, no need for small hands this way!

I know it`s obvious but please leave a few threads on the nut before pulling off the steering wheel as they hurt like hell when it hits your face !!!! :o: :o: :o: :o:
