i had a 325 with a getrag gearbox ...BUT it had the stangest winnes to it, it was if it was straight cut 8O . ive still got it just incase it was.
the winne was a very cool sound and didnt change sound when going round corners .

i missed a gear once (or twice  ) and it felt like no other gearbox, it felt liket the gears teeth were massive
somtimes when the car was hot at idel it would make a rattleing nosie , the same rattle you get from a upgraded twinplate clutch.

apparently it was upgraded (iam not sure but i hope it is)

ive got a pic of the number on the bell housing!
but i have no idea how to display it! :?

what do you guys think?

:D

Sounds like a shagged Getrag 260 to me. My mate in Germany has a 325e (same gearbox) that whines like a touring car - because it's f*cked! The rattle is worn out layshaft bearings because it's been run low on oil.

On the edge of the bellhousing you'll see some numbers stamped in as opposed to the casting numbers. What are they?

Those are just the casting numbers - the 260 was fitted to the 323i, 325i, E34 730i, 735i, 530i..........

Look around the edge of the bellhousing where the gearbox bolts up to the engine. There will be a stamped in number with 2 or 3 letters after it. This is the serial number and from that we can tell you what it came from! You'll need to really clean the bellhousing edge up to find it.

Easy - the letters are all on ETK. BMW did it so that they could use one casing for two or three different gearboxes and know what was what on the production line.
