steering is stiff and wont self center

i have a 1989 325 touring. the car now has an rb25 engine in it. i had this problem before the conversion. the steering will not self center when going round corners and is quite stiff. the stiffness gets worse when u pick up speed. like i say i had this before the conversion but during the build i had an e36 rack conversion done with the solid steering joints (e34 knuckles etc) the steering wheel itself squeaks when its turned. could anyone help with this or has anyone had this problem before.

Remove the steery wheel and check for contact between the rear of the wheel and the top of the column switches.
