1987 320 cab starter motor question
Moderator: martauto
my starter broke recently which i have replaced with another but it is different.i have 4 wires from loom 2 thick 1 10m/m and 1 8m/m which went on to solenoid, two together on 13m/m 1 on 10 1 on 8.however new one only has 1 13m/m and 1 10m/m at bottom, can i join the 8 and 10m/m together on the bottom 10m/m nut
old one has 3 connections as new one has 2 excluding the earth strap one

Join the wire with the 8mm terminal to the inner stud with the 13mm nut - the one that only has the braid or strap going to the motor itself.
Alternatively, exchange it for the correct motor. Your car has facelift wiring, and they've given you one for pre facelift.

There's confusion here with the mixture of stud sizes and nut sizes. 8mm stud =13mm nut, 6mm stud = 10mm nut, and 5mm stud = 8mm nut.
The outer 8mm stub should have a very thick black and a thick red connected to it, from the battery and alternator respectively.
The 6mm stud should have a black/yellow wire on it, which is the start signal.
The 5mm stud should have a black/green wire to the unloader relays on it.
Your replacement motor doesn't have the 5mm stud on it, and the black/green should be connected to the inner 8mm stud instead, which normally just has the strap or braid to the motor on it.
The body shell of cabs. remained pre facelift for a couple of years after the rest of the range was updated, but the electrics and power train, etc., was mostly updated at the same time as the others.
